5 Questions To Ask Before You Hire A Newborn Photographer

behind-the-scenes, newborn photography

With so many amazingly talented newborn photographers in Sioux Falls, it may be a challenge to narrow the field and find the perfect photographer for your session. But no worries! I have a short list of questions you can ask to help you find the right Sioux Falls newborn photographer for you and your sweet new babe.

What does “newborn safety” mean to you?

This is so important! Since there isn’t any sort of licensing process for newborn photographers, it’s important to ask about safety! For example, I’m up to date on all of my vaccines, and during cold and flu season, I wear a mask. I also don’t ever do any unsafe poses, and if baby doesn’t like a pose, I won’t force them into it. What is your potential  newborn photographer’s own best practices around the safety of your precious new baby?

How long have you been a newborn photographer?

I’ve been in the photography industry since 2001, and specializing in newborns since 2012. That’s a long time of working with the tiniest clients, so I have loads of experience and know what’s possible, what’s safe, and what’s not. Granted, everyone starts somewhere, but it’s okay to want someone with experience handling your baby, rather than someone brand-new.

What’s included in my session?

Every newborn photographer runs their session and their business slightly different, so if something in the contract isn’t clear, just ask!

Follow up! Can I include family and siblings in my session?

Ask this as a follow up to the last question! With the exception of my newborn-only wrapped mini sessions, I always include parent, family, and/or sibling photos in my sessions, but not every photographer offers these poses in every session, so it’s a good question to ask during the selection process.

What’s the post-session process timeline?

Of course you’ll want your gallery and print products, if any, as soon as possible, but what’s the photographer's typical turn-around time? This is the time to ask.

BONUS QUESTION! How do I book?

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices and made a final photographer selection, it’s time to book your session — but how? Does your photographer require a deposit? How do you choose the session date? Typically, I write the client in the book on their due date, then once baby arrives, we choose the actual session date when baby is between 6 and 18 days old. But not every photographer uses this method, so it’s best to double-check.

Now that you’ve asked all these questions, it’s time to ask anything else that hasn’t been thoroughly answered yet, anything else you need to know to make the perfect photographer choice.
